I am a Swiss resident, and spent my vacation in the US last year. Unfortunately, a free AOL trial CD was given to me in a computer shop. I installed on my computer, and since then they are charging me every month for several services I have never wanted and never used. Before the trial period expired I called them to cancel this account. The person at AOL I was talking to told me that they would like to offer me another free trial. I told them that I don't need that because I will return back to Europe and there I have already a provider. He told me that in spite of he will extend my membership and then cancel it for me before the next expiration.
I thought it was very strange that he didn't cancel it rightaway, but I believed him that he would cancel it after this extended "trial period".
I went back to Switzerland and after 3 Weeks I left home again to go to the UK for studying. I used my credit card rarely and still didn't have online access on my credit card statement. So I couldn't check the monthly statements. My father opened my credit card statement that was sent to Switzerland and told me that a company AOL is charging every month for several services! I contacted AOL in Germany by email, but they didn't respond. I tried it again, and again no respond at all. I waited and waited, but nothing happened.
I called AOL US again and they told me that I have never called them to cancel my AOL trial. What is just a lie!
I spent more than 2 hours on the telefon, always given somebody else. Two times the telefone line even "disconected". A woman tried to convince me to extend my AOL "membership", offering me some kind of advantages of college students. Altought she knew I am a Swiss resident at not at all studying in the US: 0! Anyway, they told me again that now the account is cancelled, but didn't want to refund my all those illegal charges they had done. I am so uppset! I am a student and for me this is a lot of money that has now accumulated.
I only hope that a lot of other people read this, and won't fall for those AOL "free" trial CDs.
