A few months ago I got a Bill in the mail from "Workout world" stating that my membership dues were overdue.
I have never belonged to any gym, so I was panicked that my identity was stolen. I called them and explained that I was not a member of any gym and they should cancel my membership immediately as it wasn't me who signed up. The agreed to cancel the membership. I thought all was OK.
However the next month, another bill arrives with "past due" fees and a higher balance. They told me that in order to cancel my "membership" to a gym I never belonged to and never signed up for, I would have to pay the amount in full. I explained to them I was never a member, so there was never a membership to be canceled.
They then threatened me that until I paid the amount would increase every month and they would turn it over to "collections" which would ruin my credit rating thus preventing me from ever owning a house. They said I could pay now, while it was a small amount or wait a few years and when I need to buy a house and need to clean up my credit score I would have to pay a much larger amount.
