Complaint / Review
The Sanctuary School Of Therapeutic Massage And Energy Medicine
Used a binding contract from an educational lender to obtain a $2000 downpayment from me, did not submit the contract to TFC and then closed the school before their contractual obligation could be fulfilled

There is a scanned copy of the subject contract near the bottom of a web page at www dot cscolvin dot blogspot dot com along with other documentation.

It was signed by me and Rick Vrenios, an owner of The Sanctuary School. On November 28 I called (800) 832-5626 and spoke with a TFC representative who confirmed this contract is binding and no contract was submitted for me with TFC.

The issue escalated to being reported here because attempts to follow up have not been satisfactory. During an attempt to recover my $2000 downpayment, owners of the Sanctuary School publicly, in a BBB complaint response, and falsely accused me of many things and made false claims such as resolving a chronic injury that prevented me from working for 4 years when no one at The Sanctuary School treated that injury which remains unchanged.

The problem began in early June when Connie Vrenios said the next program covered classes missed in the ongoing program she put me in. Rick and Connie did not submit the contract with TFC, then closed The Sanctuary School on October 26 and now it's obvious there was no other program. Connie and Rick effectively used TFC's contract to obtain my $2000 downpayment knowing they would not provide the full program specified in the contract.

Additionally, The Sanctuary School charged me for a free student massage and books which were returned to them in excellent condition just as they had been given to me. They were unused because I was hesitant to use new books without the school first being paid by TFC.

There is also my handwritten note and Connie's email, both dated July 19:

"To Connie and Rick:

I called TFC early last week to inquire about my account# so I could make a loan payment before it was due. I called again last Monday morning. Monday evening TFC called me back to say they don't show my loan information in their system. So, I'm not certain if I'm still actually a student or not, but I definitely owe you guys for the classes I've been taking and need to make a payment arrangement.

Also don't know if I'm still scheduled for this weekend's classes for Reiki-ssage I. Could someone please call and let me know? Thanks!

Hi Catherine -

We received your note - Yes, you are scheduled for this weekend's Reiki-ssage I class if you wish to continue. If you have the time tomorrow, please come in after 12 - before 12 it's too busy - & we can talk about things.

Rick said to tell you that since TFC levies their fees from the time they receive the application, he hadn't faxed in your paperwork yet - has to do with fiscal responsibility, not your student status. OK, breathe now.

I'll give you a call in the morning - I wasn't sure how late you stay up & didn't want to disturb your household.

Though they claim to be Reiki masters, I do know Rick and Connie are (were?) licensed massage therapists as well as instructors. This matter has therefore been reported to massage therapy organizations and the Illinois Department of Professional Regulation.

Thanks to complaint for the opportunity to present this sorry circumstance. It was my personal experience that Connie and Rick are complete charlatans and sickeningly adept at exploiting vulnerabilities, but I sincerely hope someone somewhere will benefit from my mistake in doing business with them.
