We purchased a 62 inch big screen TV along with the circuit city advantage plan in case anything went wrong with it. We had a 4 year plan that started AFTER the one year manufacturer warranty. Our television went bad just after the one year mark so we called just as we were told we were to do in case of an event. When we called we were told that we had to TAKE the 62 inch big screen TV to a qualified repair facility. Our plan agreement paperwork stated that a repair facility would come to our home since the television was larger than just a console model.
Instead, we had to find a way to get our huge tv to a repair facility and at that point circuit city would NOT cover the repairs because it was not a "preferred" facility. They were a "preferred" facility through the manufacturer of the television though and the only one within a 100 mile radius that was willing to even work on the thing.
Our plan that cost us nearly $400 was never honored and if not for the manufacturer we would have been out the tv as well as the plan fee.
Around the same time we purchased a laptop computer along with this so called "wonderful" plan that they offer. My laptop went bad and they were ever so gracious when trying to help me get it fixed - after the initial 30 minutes of trying to explain to them that we could not determine the problem because the problem is that it won't boot up!!!
When I finally got everything together that I supposedly needed and sent everything in I didn't need the discs that I had to purchase because I was told it would not be fixed without them. They had my laptop for over 30 days awaiting parts supposedly. When I talk to them about the amount of time - because I was guaranteed that if it could not be fixed in 10 days it would be replaced - I also told them that the keys were rubbed bare (no letters on them) and the battery would not hold a charge for longer than 30 minutes.
I was told that these items would be corrected once they saw the problems - and the keys are an obvious problem. Well, I got my laptop back with a smaller hard drive than it originally had in it AND my keys are still naked AND my battery STILL doesn't hold a charge!!!
I've seen SEVERAL complaints/reports on circuit city so called protection plans. I hope that this problem can be corrected for all of us that have spent money on something that is not valid. We were not able to be refunded for the plan on the television even though they refused to pay anything or have one of their preferred facilities come to the house to diagnose our problem. Come to find out this was a problem for this type of television and that was why the manufacturer covered it for us.
Hopefully this place can be stopped and all of us that have paid to support their company - and did not realize we were making a huge contribution to the company but rather that our products would be taken care of - can receive some sort of compensation even if its in the form of a fine to the company for misrepresenting a service that they don't provide unless it suits their own needs. It's hard to move a 62" big screen tv in a jeep!!! And even harder to actually talk to a person when you need a second repair such as is the case with my laptop.
