Lack of pertinent information on web site for products not compatible with their other equipment

I ordered a print server for my Dell printer. I went to dell.com to find one that would best work with my Dell printer. The web site did not indicate that there was a problem with compatibility with Dell printers. When I received the product, I could not get it to work. I contacted the manufacturer's technical support and they could not get it to work. They checked their records and found that their print server is not compatible with any Dell printer (let alone the one I have).

I contacted Dell, was on hold for 15 to 20 minutes. I asked for a Return Authorization Number. I was transfered and put on hold again. I was then transfered again and again on hold. I was on hold for about an hour all told. Then I was told that I needed to call another number the next day. When I did, I was told that I had to pay shipping costs to return the item. I explained how the web site didn't explain this information well and that I could not have forseen that my printer would not work with this and they insist that it be my responsibility to pay for return shipping. I find it disappointing that I am being blamed for this error when their web site lacks the total information.
