Monitronics International
Ripoff cancelled contract within allotted time and still they demand money, Sounds like I am not the only one Monitronics is trying to put the screws to!

Monitronics fulfilled 3 yr contract, renewed, but within the 3 day time period decided to cancel.

Sounds like I am not the only one Monitronics is trying to put the screws to! When I our 3 year contract was up I decided to renew. We had no major problems with service thus far. I signed the contract and mailed, then informed my husband I had taken care of it. We then talked further and, since my husband was coming up on a possible lay off in the following six months, decided I probably should have waited to renew. We looked at the contract and it stipulated that we had three days to cancel after entering into it. No big deal, I had just signed the day before and mailed that day. I called Monitronics to ask them how to cancel. I was informed to simply write a short letter and send to them. I did so and sent it to the same address that I sent the contract to. The next month I get a bill. No big deal they probably didn't get stuff processed, sometimes this can take time.

The following month I get a call. Told them I sent cancellation letter. Okay, I'm told that such things are processed in a different department and they will inquire and get it fixed. I had this conversation at least another half a dozen times in the following two weeks. I also faxed copies of the cancellation two other times. The calls stopped and I figure they finally got it fixed.

WRONG! Six months later they are sending collection notices to my mothers house. Why in the world they would send them to her house is beyond me. I called their collector (CMI) and was told to fax a copy of the letter and the contract and to please circle where it stipulated the 3 day cancellation option. I faxed it to the number given and called to make sure they received it. Surprise, surprise they didn't recieve it. Went back and forth with them and Monitronics faxing, refaxing and getting passed to this person and that person.

Finally boiled down to they didn't care about my cancellation. I now owed $720 for the contract in full. Three full years at the renewable rate of $19.95, with not one month of service used. Today almost 2 years after I cancelled I get a call from an attorney's office, Goldstein and something, something telling me that they are taking me to court to collect what is now a $900 fee and that soon an additional amount of $1500 will be added for attorney fees. Of course I argued back and forth with some supposed "legal right rep" who was "just informing me of my rights" Yeah right, like these jerks care about my rights.

Anyway, they offered to settle the matter at a reduced amount. I told them I am going to speak to an attorney before I pay them a red cent. Then, I was told that if an attorney contacted them that the reduced offer would be null and void and the additional fees would be added. I told him I would have my attorney contact them anyway. So, I am scheduled to meet with an attorney next week. We'll see what he has to say.

This is all so unbelievably ridiculous. How does Monitronics expect to stay in business? We were all set to go back to their service in a few months after the lay off threat was over and now you couldn't pay me to use them again. Maybe a class action lawsuit is in order here!
