A couple of days ago, I received an email from an address I didn't recognize and deleted it without opening it. I didn't think about it again after that until today.
Today I found a charge on my checkcard for 79.95 from cic*credit monitor svc. I had never even heard of this company and I certainly didn't request anything having to do with my credit. I tried calling the phone number but I get a recording at all hours of the day saying the office is closed.
So I called my bank's customer service line to find out where this came from. Chris told me that it comes from an email (the light bulb went on) and that it contained a clause stating that deletion of the email signifies agreement and acceptance of the service as well as authorization to debit my card. He also told me he's encountered the same problem from about 60 different customers in the past week.
He told me there's no way to stop it once it starts except to close the card and reissue it with a credit to my account.
