This school is HORRIBLE. The teachers for the most part teach 2 to 3 classes of which they are NOT qualified for. Teaching licenses are jokes to the people at this school as they do not care who teaches what. The second thing about Guilford Day School is that they charge 15,000 dollars per student plus. What do you get with this money besides a substandard education? How about being talked about as a parent to people all around the school? How about discrimination based on how much money you are willing to give to the school?
This is a school that caters to students with learning differences - the number one issue with students having learning differences is social problems. My child was one of the students that had this problem and did either of the counselors offer support? No. They informed me that they didn't teach that at Guilford Day School. Hmmm. And that isn't what bothers me the most - their traditional sit down and shut up curriculum can't even be challenged by the teachers. They say that they are using all of these unique strategies when in all honesty the only thing they are using is stuff you could get online. The sentence writing strategy? Never helped my child. And yet I wonder what could be worse?
How about administrators who I will not now name going after students because they think they are ghetto and trying to kick them out of the school? Or - what about the pre arranged leaders that the board selects - such as team leaders and what not - people who are the best for the job are not chosen, just the people who have impressed the board the most despite what they do for students.
Another thing that is amazing is that the secretary is completely crazy, she has her moments of kindness but you never know when those will be. There isn't a nurse at the school - she is the acting nurse and pretends as though she has the degree although she does not. What about the teachers? Some teachers are fantastic and will really help your child to succeed - but did you know that before teachers even begin to teach they are informed that certain students will misbehave and their families are messed up? I dare you to sneak up to the teacher's lounge at lunch and hear the gossip about parents because I have heard it. Or about how awful the students are.
Students are treated substandard and any opinions they have are dismissed immediately because what do students know? Even counselors have problems at GDS - one of the counselors students don't even want to talk to because they don't trust her because she can't keep their confidences and tells the administration and everyone else of the students' concerns. And the other counselor? She gossips around the school not realizing that parents know when they are telling something to her that she is spreading it around the school. She must enjoy spreading gossip.
What about the administrator that just recently got their administrators degree but has been operating in that capacity for a while now? This school is a HUGEEEEEEEEEE rip off! My suggestion as an ex parent? For those of you interested in Guilford Day School-
1. Look at other schools like New Garden Friends, Greensboro Day School or even a public school which are ALL much better
2. Ask for a record of the teachers and how many are teaching with licenses in the area they are teaching in
3. Ask why parents are talked about in such a negative way behind their backs
4. Ask about why the school has only traditional education and how your child's school day would run
5.investigate from other parents like myself why we stopped paying 15,000 a year RIP OFF and why our kids left the school.
For those of you already at Guilford Day School a few suggestions
1. Consider transitioning your child out of the school, I will tell you that no matter what or how long until your child graduates - they are not ready to transition? I mean how else will GDS get their money?
2. Ask for proof that what your child's teacher is teaching they are licensed to teach
3. Ask how much the Perfect Notebook truly is helping your child and if they could take that idea with them to another school
4. Go up to the teacher's lounge at lunch, or walk by where several teachers are gathering whispering and find out what they are talking about - after all - it COULD be you.
5.investigate how IEPs are REALLY put together and how lesson plans are made.
