Complaint / Review
Temple University
Fail to solve grievance fairly

It has been almost one year, I had a professor, Simon Hakim, who have given me the grade D for my summer course, in that course I thought he was an ethical professor, and I ignore his ill teaching policies during the semester. But given the grade I regret that I did not report a complaint. But more importantly, I have follow grievance procedures for Temple University, wrote a big report of all the abuses and submitted testimonials from students supporting my arguments. The chairman agreed so forward it to next step, premeditation process, I spoke with the professor and what he say was drastic.

In the interview he say - 'he does not care anyone of his student because he treat them as adults and if they want to cheat they can, they don't have to attend classes, and I don't provide any guides or guidelines to helps students'. Also I didn't get any participation points because the professor reply you need to be an outstanding student. Next he cancel out most of the grading scales, particular a project, and never properly told the class how he would remeasure it.

Next step was the grievance committee decision where I have to make the accusations and proves.in the process, the Grievance committee failed to look at the students testimonials, and ignore most of my arguments. The professor never treated all the students inconsistent manner; such as, one person have a presentation he denied one and allow the other. More examples of my arguments were, he does not check attendance, he does not give what is on the exam or help the student what to study for but only reply just read the book yourself - everyone failed - and when we would review the exam, we would ask our professor why was this question wrong and he would just pick the ones who have it correct to explained it for him, while the favorite students who got their wrong, they can't understand anything from the professor was saying. What is more disappointing was the grievance committee assume everything by looking at the majority of the grades of the students, and ignore the rest of my arguments.

Another factor was the assistant Dean told me you cannot use any witnesses to support my argument, but only after the decision, she told me the oppositely ' that you can use witnesses'; also I was never inform to go to the hearing only afterwards the Assistant dean would tell me I have to put it in writing. I file an appeal and spoke with the dean who sign the Grievance decision along with the chairman of Grievance Decision Committee, they listen to my claims together and look at the witnesses' testimonials, and they agree with me and intent to speak with the professor to change my grade, however, the professor was overseas - so I advised the dean to forward the appeal to the Provost, rumor says there have never been any plaintiff been there. And so it was true, they denied me for a further review and failed to give an explanation why I was wrong, but only to say the school have done no wrong nor is it severe enough to be granted for a further review.

I was left with the last impression, students who have grievance with Temple University must file a suit through the common pleas court, which in time and expense, hope that will exhaust the plaintiff and force them to withdraw from the grievance, and retake the course. But this course was an elective for me, so I decided to fight it, with all my will.
