Clever ad, but hardly a reality.
It's my fault, really. I'm an IT guy who wanted to work with more people and less motherboards. I heard that you could make great tips and meet fun people as a bartender, so I thought I'd attend one of those academies I'd seen advertisement for.
That was two months ago. I've graduated, and only now am I beginning to realize the reality of the position I admired - most chain restaurants will only hire "internally", meaning you work up from bus boy to waiter to bar back to bartender over a period of years. And those places that do hire on directly to the position require previous experience.
The Tempe Bartending Academy is NOT real-world experience, at least to the restaurants in the Phoenix Metro area.
If you're interested in bartending do yourself a favor - before giving $400 to Steve Sutton (Owner of the Tempe Bartending Academy, and a salesman through-and-through), call up some local bars and restaurants and ask them if they would hire someone directly from the Bartending Academy, or any bartending school for that matter.
If you can find someone who would, get a hold of me; I'll be the one swapping out video cards in service and repair.
