My Sony Vaio laptop was stolen from my apartment from a bad houseguest who then pawned it at Jumping Jack Cash for a few hundred dollars used to buy drugs. When I located the computer and notified police, the police seized it. Since the police were too busy to investigate this crime of he-said, she-said (the thief claimed I gave permission to pawn the computer), they released it back into Jumping Jack Cash's possession.
Steve, the manager there, refused to return it to me despite my pleas. I had a lot of irreplaceable data on that computer representing thousands of dollars worth of web design history, personal music files and software. Steve erased the computer and sold it for $700 without even calling me to let me know he was erasing it first that I might come in and transfer the data to an external drive at least.
I was out the cost of the laptop plus I had to re-do 3 websites I built. Backups were stolen too. I lost thousands in this deal so Jumping Jack Cash could make $500. Nice going JJC!
