Verizon Wireless
Beware Identity Theft via Verizon? Bellbrook, Cincinnati, Fort Myers

In August I relocated from Ohio to Florida. When the contract expired on my Verizon phone in Feb (?) of I opted for a Free-up plan. Later in the year when chatting with my daughter, she expressed her desire for a newer phone. As I had to purchase a particular model for the Free-up plan, I suggested she use my old (but more current) phone as it was now useless to me. She went to the local Verizon store and transferred her account information to this particular phone. She also set-up her account for auto-debit from her checking account and had her new number programmed for that phone.

In 2004 I pulled my credit report only to find Verizon Wireless listed as a creditor. Doing what any sane person would do, I called Verizon and was told they couldn't understand why it would show on my credit and asked for my phone number - which I couldn't remember since it had been 2-1/2 years since I'd had a Verizon contract. They then asked for my SS# which was tied to my daughter's existing account. I called my daughter and she immediately went to Verizon and was told her paperwork was lost because of a changeover in whatever abyss their records are kept. She filled out another set of forms and signed another contract all the while being assured this would all be corrected.

Earlier this year, I believe it was February, I received a 3-way call (Verizon CS and my daughter). She was trying to make access the account for which she'd signed and paid but was told her social security number did not match that on the account. Guess whose did, mine! She was told she was not an authorized user on the account so that triggered the conference call during which the customer service rep asked for my social security number. Needless to say, I was livid! The CS rep promised to rectify the situation and my daughter was to go, once again, to the Verizon store and complete the necessary contracts, which she did promptly.

Does it end there, no... I tried to contact my daughter in July and had difficulty reaching her on her cell phone. This made me especially nervous as she had recently been involved in a serious car wreck.

I called Verizon to file a trouble report on her line and they told me she did not have an account... You guessed it... I had an account, which if I did not bring current immediately would be shown, negatively on my credit report. Why wasn't the account current? Because my daughter was blocked by Verizon from viewing the bills and they would not send her a paper copy. Why didn't they send me a copy? Because I'd moved 3 years ago when my Verizon contract was not renewed.

I tried once again to explain the situation to two other customer service (?) reps. They didn't care - send the money or deal with a negative report. There were billing issues surrounding roaming (she requested and was told she had national coverage - apparently she did not) but to keep the wolves at bay, I negotiated for an $80 credit and paid approximately $200 to keep things from getting any uglier.

I contacted my daughter again and asked if she had copies of her contract and, having moved 2 times in 2 years, she could not find anything. I also do not have a copy of mine since I ignorantly believed I did not have a Verizon plan. When I called Verizon today 8/15 to see if someone would send me a copy of the contract I signed, I was told I would have to request via court order. Court order? That's rather like calling my bank to ask for a copy of a cancelled check and being told I need a court order! I also asked if they could show me when, either in writing or verbally, that I authorized changes to my so called account. Again, they could not. It would also require a court order. They continued to say that I gave my daughter full access to the account, which I did in February so that she could access the account on line and pay her bill until the matter was resolved but this fiasco began well before that and Verizon took it upon themselves - without my authorization - to permit changes to an account I owned due to their ability to access my social security number at will.

Verizon now also tells me that I can access the account on line, as it's my account, which I tried and cannot. My daughter can access the account.

The Verizon CS rep, (Alice?) had several suggestions surrounding the mystery and both involved frauds perpetrated by my daughter. Strangely, I rather feel it is the other way around.
Where do I begin?
