Sears offered a 25% off sale on various men's clothing on Columbus Day weekend, so I trotted off to my nearest Sears (Saugus, MA, 8 miles round trip) at the start of the sale to stock up on pajamas for the winter and summer.
The problem was that there was no merchandise to be had in my size (XL, UPC 645619009718) at the store. The shelves were 1/3 empty and they had only 1 pair of pajamas (winter or summer) my size in stock. So I picked up the pair even though not in the color that I wanted. Then I went to the next closest Sears (Burlington MA, 24 miles round trip) to stock up, but I again found the exact same situation — only 1 pair of pajamas in stock in my size. How does Sears expect to sell merchandise if it does not have merchandise in stock? And how does t expect to retain customers if it draws them to phantom sales with no merchandise in stock? It doesn't appear that there is anyone minding their inventory. It's not as if its 1900 and clerks have to go around counting the items on the shelves. These days they have computers that can not only tell you what you have on your shelves but also to alert you if supplies are low or have run out. The appearance is that Sears simply doesn't give a damn. My feeling towards Sears is now the same — I have better things to do than waste my time and money on gas looking to purchase merchandise that should be in stock but is not. Time to find another retail source that I can place my trust in.
