Furniture & Rug Gallery
Breaks promises!

On 9/1/01, I purchased several things from Furniture & Rug Gallery of Evanston. We agreed to have these items delivered and installed in our apartment on 9/13/01. At the time of delivery, my wife noticed the set of bar stools were 24" instead of the 29" height we had ordered. She immediately contacted the store and advised of the mistake. After some hesitation, they agreed to exchange them for the right ones. The delivery man took them back and my wife made a note on their bill of sale that they were to be exchanged.
The delivery man refused to install a floor lamp that we also ordered. When asked why, he said, "We don't install the lamps. That [the lamp] takes a lot of time and we don't have that much time." Again, my wife called Sam Chaudry (the salesman) at the store and explained the situation. He started saying it would cost $50 extra for installation and that it is "understood" that "everything" did not include the floor lamp. My wife signed for the unopened box and other merchandise in the delivery.
When I got home from work and opened the box, I noticed that the base of the lamp had some scratches and that the bulbs were broken. Even the cardboard box it came in looked worn. I found this unacceptable and called Sam. "Oh, I didn't know they even provided bulbs for these lamps, " he said. I thought to myself, "I've never, ever bought a brand new lamp without the bulb." When I told him about the scratches, he asked if they were noticeable. I said that they were and Sam said "no problem" and agreed to replace the lamp with a new one. He also said he would call me the following day to let me know when he could deliver a new lamp. No call. I called him on 9/17/01. He said he couldn't pick up the lamp because it cost him too much to send his delivery man back to my apartment. Sam said I would have to drop it off to the store. I didn't think it was fair that I should have to do the leg work when it is the store's fault. When I told him his delivery man would have to come to deliver the bar stools anyway, he insisted that I drop off the lamp.
At present, I have no idea when, or if, Sam Chaudry will responsibly ship merchandise for which I've paid in full. Every time I talk to him, he changes his story. I have tried many ways to convince him to do the right thing but Sam deflects professional responsibility better than an All-Star NHL goalie deflects a hockey puck.
I realize I may or may not get justice, but this is my personal plea to all hard-working people to NOT patronize Furniture & Rug Gallery. They will cheat you!!!
