In my search for a patio builder and contractor, I received Glenn Klein's information from a friend who had heard of his work in his neighborhood off TC Jester. After contacting Glenn via phone and e-mail, he e-mailed me with an initial estimate. After rescheduling the meeting several times (once due to his sister's illness / injury), he drove out to my house and we discussed building plans, his method of construction, and again potential prices (this meeting took place on May 23rd). He showed us pictures of previous work and assured us of his reliability. After discussion of the services he would provide (a stamped, stained, and textured concrete patio, 16 x 30 for $ 3500) and a new contract, he returned the following Saturday, May 30th to show us color choices for the stain, review the contract, sign the contract, set a starting date, and pick up the check for a 50 % deposit ($ 1,750.00). He cashed the check that same day. Glenn said the patio would start on Monday, June 8.
The excuses started immediately. He e-mailed me June 7th saying he was trying to finish another large project, and he would not be done, so we would have to reschedule the starting date. After e-mails back and forth, he e-mailed me June 8th saying he tried to call me and was in a wreck and injured his leg pretty badly, so the project would be delayed further, and he would contact me later in the week with an update. He e-mailed June 12th saying he had a doctor's appointment on the 15th and should be released to work. He e-mailed me the 15th saying he had to stay off his legs awhile longer, and he would check back on his computer later. The doctor [had him] on some medications. I told Glenn to send his crew anyway, since he could not work and he had already cashed my check. He responded by saying he realized my concern, and he has a foreman that he can stay in contact with every minute. He promised he would talk to him, set a day, and contact me the day before he starts. After that, Glenn only responded twice to my MANY e-mails saying he knew I wanted it done ASAP and he would contact me when the date was set (e-mail June 17th). He then e-mailed me June 21st saying his foreman had another smaller job to finish first and that he could probably start on Wednesday, June 24, and he would confirm it on Monday, June 21.
June 21 was the last I heard from Glenn. I e-mailed him asking for updates and I demanded a return of our money with no response. His phone number can no longer be reached. The majority of our correspondence was done through e-mail, and after he cashed our check, it was ALL done through e-mail, and he never returned a phone call.
I have recently contacted Detective Andy Lui (713.755.7874, lui_andy@dao. Hctx.net) and the lawyer in charge of Glenn's case in Consumer Protection (713.755.5836). Glenn is currently in jail and his next court date is on August 4th (case # 122161401010).
