Still No Money From Insurance 1 Year After House Fire!

Tomorrow it will be one year since my home fire, which was claimed to be a "total loss" by the adjuster. We filed our claim immediately, and foolishly thought this would be a simple process, since the fire was not our fault. Ha!

It took several weeks to get the adjuster in and several more weeks to get the report filed. During this time, we were extremely cooperative with all concerned parties, and we were assured that this would go smoothly and we would have our maximum payout, based on our policy, in a short time-frame.

Long story short, we have been waiting for a year now, and Assurant has done nothing for us at all. No money for repairs, contents, or living expenses, and now they claim that they can't even find the policy. Criminal!

We call them on a continuous basis, at least once per week, and get a different person each time. Their response seems to alternate between total confusion about our policy information, to promising that "the check is in the mail", to being dumbfounded as to why we haven't gotten any money yet, and back to total confusion again.

The only money that WAS paid out actually went to Wells Fargo, who held our mortgage, and they would not forward it to us, but eventually absorbed the escrow account to pay off the loan, which leaves us with that much less to fix our home with!

We are in the process of contacting the most appropriate and aggressive attorneys we can find, and have also contacted our state representative to see if these actions are legitimate, and to hold the responsible parties personally and corporately accountable, if at all possible.

I am shocked that business practices such as making false promises and outright lying to clients on a conitnuous basis is acceptable, but sadly I have seen many similar stories in my research on this case. I am planning to make it my mission to raise awareness on this issue, and find out what our elected officials can do to protect our citizens from these jackals.
