Rick Menendez Roof Repair Rip Off

I contacted All Set Roofing & Paving from their yellow pages ad and website which claims that they are "an honest, reputable company with integrity and that you can trust to make sure you are 100% satisfied with the job."

When the named individual arrived I told him that I had a minor leak in my ceiling. He inspected my roof and showed me that it was coming from a small crack in one of the shingles and that a few of the other shingles were starting to come apart. He quoted me a price of $450.00 to cover the area with metal sheeting, completely seal (with tar) around all of the metal as well as flashing around chimney and various other pipes coming from the roof to make sure that no water could leak through. Then he would completely cover the metal with shingles in an attempt to match the existing shingles and further waterproof the leak. I agreed and he went to Home Depot to get the materials he needed and returned to show me what he had bought (metal and shingles).

I informed him that he only had about 2 hours to complete the job because I had plans to leave and he assured me that he would be finished. About 10 minutes before I had told him that I needed to leave, he came and told me he was finished. I was shocked to see that the "repair" consisted of 4 metal strips that were laying on top of the roof (not even laying flat). He told me that he decided that he couldn't put the shingles over it because it would make nail holes and cause it to leak. Needless to say I was very unhappy and told him I did not feel comfortable paying him for such sloppy, unprofessional work especially when he didn't even repair it the way he had told me he would. I knew my HOA would not accept that! He argued that he worked 2 hrs.in the heat, that he had sealed it thoroughly so that it would stop the leak and that he would guarantee it for 7 years. I reluctantly agreed to pay him $350.00 instead.

I told him that I needed a receipt and he went to his truck and returned with what appeared to be a copy of a blank letterhead. Then he asked ME to write out what he had done on the receipt because "his handwriting was sloppy". I told him no that he would have to do it. He wrote that he had stopped the leak and guaranteed his work for 7 years and signed it.

Since I was in a hurry to leave for my evening plans, I unfortunately failed to check his workmanship. Imagine my shock and horror the next day when I discovered that I could LIFT UP the metal sheeting and see directly into my attic through a hole approximately 10 inches in diameter (about the size of a small pizza). I have pictures to confirm his "workmanship". Of course I immediately called my bank and discovered that he had gone directly to MY bank with my check to withdraw the money.

When I contacted him he refused to refund my money and had the nerve to ask me if it had leaked. I have also discovered that both the phone numbers in his ad appear to be personal numbers and the address listed for his "company" belong to an apartment complex. The phone number listed on his "receipt" is disconnected.

After 2 estimates from 2 other qualified professional roofers, I was told that I would now have to take immediate action to "fix" the damage that he caused and repair the roof correctly before it rained otherwise I was facing the probability that the ceiling could be severely damaged. I was forced to pay an additional $500.00 to have the roof repaired correctly.

This has been an very unpleasant experience and one that I really could not afford. I do not want this to happen to anyone else.
