I was at Mealy's yesterday to buy a dining room set marked at $899.00. The two previous times I was there with my girlfriend we looked at the same set. Both times we had a sales peson helping us, telling us how great Mealy's was compared to some other stores. When we walked into the store yesterday to actually buy the set, we came across something unexpected. One of the sales people who helped us one of the previous times was there, he said hello and Introduced himself again (like he never met us before). As he was writing up the table, he told us the price was going to be $450.00 higher. When we asked why, we were told that the chairs for the set were sold separately (which is not the way it seemed to us, and also to another customer in the store at the time).
When I asked to speak to a manager, he brought out a lady, who he said was the Sales Manager. After being very rude to us, and telling us that it is marked clearly (which it was not) they left. I called over another sales person (who was very nice) and he told us that she was NOT the Sales Manager, but the Office Manager. The fact that they would bring over a person who has nothing to do with the sales was crazy. The fact that we thought the price was $899.00, and then it was changed to $1459.00 should be a testament to the way they do business at that location. If I was the only person who thought that, I might have blamed myself. But in this case, it was also my girlfriend who came to this conclusion, and also another couple in the store (who left after they heard the REAL PRICE).
We really liked the set, and decided to buy it before we were told what the real price was. That is a perfect example of Bait and Switch
I was told they do not haggle in Mealy's. I was not trying to haggle, as much as find out why they would mark the price the way they did. I took a picture of the price tag with my cell phone, and will be sending it to Mealy's Corporate offices.
