You Don't Want To Work For This Company ripoff

If you like to be HEAVILY micromanaged and pressured, you will love working for Ethan Allen. No manager is allowed to do or say anything other than what the company tells them is the Ethan Allen way of saying and doing anything. No one can say anything bad or not positive about the company or they are not a team player and are trouble makers.

You can see and feel the stress and pressure everyday. General and Regional Managers must constantly be tightening the screws on the sales people and if the managers let up they won't be there long. This company knows nothing of inspiring voluntary high performance like the management at Microsoft, Nike or the E Network does. Bill Gates wouldn't work at Ethan Allen for a week without buying the company and revamping it, because he knows you can be profitable AND have happy very productive employees. A manager no longer with the company who has a lesser managment job with another company now making 25% less than he was at Ethan Allen says it's worth every dollar less not to live under the constant eyeballing and pressure he lived under far too long. He went up against the high Veep and ANYONE who does that will be on the unemployment line very quickly.

I really don't think Mr. Kathwari, the CEO-Prez, has any real idea that the performance standards institued in Danbury are being attained by constant browbeating, pounding on and threatening of the sales-design staff on a daily basis. I was a salesman with an Ethan Allen corporate store back east for 3 years and was successful. The best word in that sentence is "was." But, I was a successful designer for another company before Ethan Allen and I have happily moved on to another company out west and am still very successful and much happier.

Where I now work, it's normal and the smaller store writes as much business as the Ethan Allen store I was at with fewer designers. I know Ethan Allen called us designer's, and I am ligitimately a designer, but that was not what Ethan Allen really wanted. They use the term designer to make the public think they're getting something for free with their free design service. What Ethan Allen wants are hardass salespeople camoflagued as designers. They turn the screws so tight on their staff no one can stay there for long if they're not, except for the longtimers with the company since the days before over management who have enough clients to write the right sales numbers.

They even use personality psychology (psychobabble) to teach the sales staff how to talk to people in the right way so that they can also put the pressure on the customer in just the right way to buy. All of this is piously referred to as servicing the Ethan Allen customer the way they deserve to be serviced.

What it really is is successfully making the customer buy as much or more than they can afford or intended to by means of upselling using what they call building a relationship on the customers level of personality. We were even given a test on how to categorize clients by personality and then sell the hell out of them using the results of the test. Ignore what I say and go work there and you will be the next one adding a report on this site.
