If you value your time, money, and sanity, do NOT buy a home from Engle! I bought my house in May.in late shingles started coming off due to high winds. As time went on, it got worse and worse. The sad thing is that my house isn't the only one. There are 9 houses in a row from Engle that all take the brunt of the wind here. Out of the 9,8 of us are losing our roofs.
I first started contacting Engle about the roof early in 2005. They said that the roof wasn't under warranty anymore, but as a gesture of good will, they would send someone out to do a patch job. To be fair, they did send someone out, and they did do the patch job as promised.
A few weeks later, the shingles started coming off again. I contacted Engle again and informed them of the situation. They said that this time they would send someone out to do another patch job and that the repair would include resealing of every shingle. When the guy came out to do the job, I asked him if he resealed everything, and he assured me that he did.
Within weeks, shingles started coming off yet again. Because I was at a loss for what to do, I started to talk to my neighbor who was also having roof issues. He told me that he had some success talking to the head of the warranty department for the Colorado office, Chris Shaull (sp?).
When I called Chris, he informed me that Engle was not willing to do anything else. He said that the shingles they put on were legally up to code, so they were not liable. I informed him that even though the shingles were up to code, they weren't enough to hold up against the extremely high winds that we get here. That's when he made the glib comment "guess it's time to get a new roof."
As a group, my neighbors and I have contacted Engle and let them know that their business practices are EXTREMELY unethical, and that we plan on filing a class action lawsuit if they do not rectify the situation. Their response was, in essence, "go ahead and try." They know that it's difficult to fight a big company like theirs, and they're willing to bet money that we won't go through with it.
Unfortunately, I can't afford to wait for them, and so I have to pay out of pocket for a brand new roof less than 3 years after moving in to a brand new house.
Engle Homes is an unethical company, and nobody should buy a home from them!
