Internet Explorer 8

I have Windows XP. I downloaded Internet Explorer 8 only to be told that I needed to up grade that my browser wasn't supported. Had the computer since 2002. Have done other downloads without incident. Now I can't retrieve online order I did prior to download. Website states I need to upgrade.
