Nationwide insurance claims, cancellation and complaints: where to go and what the company says (checked October 14, 2026)

Nationwide's pages list these routes (as opened on October 14, 2026).

  • File an auto claim: online, in the mobile app, or by phone at 1-800-421-3535. Nationwide's claims page describes four stages: file the claim, inspect the damage, complete repairs, and get paid and receive a notice that the claim is closed. It says each claim is evaluated on its specific facts, the policy language (including exclusions, conditions and limitations) and applicable law.
  • Business claims: 1-800-228-6700. Fraud helpline: 1-800-474-7633.
  • Cancel a policy: the Contact page says "You'll need to contact your agent to cancel your insurance. We're unable to cancel via email or online," and that the agent's details are on the declaration page, ID card and billing statement.
  • Complaint or feedback: the Contact page links to Nationwide's Customer Relations page and says "we'll get back to you within 48 hours."
  • Other numbers: the phone directory lists 1-877-669-6877 for sales and service, 1-866-854-4140 for roadside assistance, and the Office of Customer Relations at 1-888-999-2018 (mail: One Nationwide Plaza, Columbus, Ohio). The general Contact page and the phone directory show different roadside-assistance numbers; both are Nationwide pages.

If the company does not resolve a dispute. A complaint can be filed with the insurance department of the state that regulates the policy; the NAIC's state directory (content.naic.org/state-insurance-departments) lets consumers find it. The NAIC complaint guide lists unfair claim delays or denials, and cancellation or nonrenewal that the consumer believes is unjustified, among the matters a department can look into, and suggests gathering the policy number, bills, records and communication history. The NAIC company-search page warns that an insurer may have different subsidiaries with different names, so copy the exact underwriting-company name from the declarations page before filing. Policy terms, state law and the facts of the claim decide the outcome.

Who is Nationwide

The legal entity named on Nationwide's About Us page is Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company; the page lists named divisions including Nationwide Financial and Nationwide Excess & Surplus. Nationwide says it has been "helping members protect what's important since 1926" (company statement). BBB's profile describes the Nationwide family of affiliated companies as offering insurance and financial services, focusing on property and casualty insurance, life insurance and retirement savings, asset management and strategic investments, through independent agents, and says independent agents have separate BBB profiles. The headquarters address shown by BBB is 1 Nationwide Plaza, Columbus, Ohio.

Many policies are sold and serviced through local agents, so a complaint may concern the insurer, the agent's office or a third party (for example a repair shop or the other driver's insurer). The word "Nationwide" is also used by unrelated businesses across the archive; this page covers Nationwide's insurance and financial-services business only.

The plaintiff, on behalf of a class, alleged that the underinsured-motorist coverage she bought from Nationwide failed to properly advise New Mexico insureds that any amounts payable on an underinsured-motorist claim are required by law to be reduced, or offset, by amounts received from the at-fault driver's insurer (description from the official settlement website, lucerouimsettlement.com, opened October 14, 2026; claims pleaded include breach of contract and violation of New Mexico's Unfair Trade Practices Act). The settlement papers (filed November 19, 2025) describe a common fund of $2,650,000 for return of a portion of premiums plus $25,000 payments to offset-subclass claimants; they say Nationwide denies all claims and wrongdoing, and the settlement website says the defendants maintain they complied with the policies and applicable law and continue to deny all material allegations. The docket shows preliminary approval on December 15, 2025, an order on the motion to approve settlement and a judgment, both dated May 26, 2026. The text of the final order was not available to read on CourtListener.
