They contacted my company posing as the official vendor for the AWEA 2010 WINDPOWER conference being held in May stating they are the vendor who is making the hotel reservations. I even did a brief background search and called them directly to ask several other questions to make sure that is who our company was to be working with, which they confirmed they were the contracted vendor.
Yesterday we received and email (here are some clips and piece, but not the whole thing): We truly regret to inform you that the reservations that you made through IEA Event Planning may no longer be intact. Unfortunately, at this time the company's assets have been put on hold by our merchant account. Currently, they are holding just over $100,000 of our funds which has caused us to temporarily cease all operations. If your room reservation is currently intact then it is quite possible that though you may be able to check into the reservation made it will not be pre-paid as expected, due to this financial situation…… At this time, we suggest that you open a dispute with your credit card company to start the process of receiving a full refund……
I called the FTC and they said the only way to shut their operations down is to file a formal complaint with the FTC so that they can investigate.
