We will never trust a Carfax Report again! It was our first and last time for their use! With the their "clean" report on a 1995 Honda Civic EX, we drove from Indianapolis, Indiana to Thornburg, Virginia to see, and yes, maybe buy this vehicle. It was first found in the Autotrader.com!
The description in the Autotrader indicated the Honda was A 1995 Honda Civic Coupe with Antilock brakes! If this was true it was a rare model EX-A! This vehicle was only produced in 1995 with 4 wheel disc brakes and antilock brakes! I was told many years ago by the Honda folks that only 11,000 were made for the whole production year! The Carfax report came back outstanding, with a BUY BACK GUARANTEE!
The Autotrader showed: $5990,37, 245 original miles, one owner, Red with Black interior, 2DR Coupe, Automatic Trans., AM/FM Compact Disc Player, Alloy Wheels, Antilock brakes, (which would mean 4 wheel disc brakes), and all the standard features of an EX Model!!! Here is what we found when we got to Virginia: It is a 1995 Honda Civic EX, but not an "A" Model, odometer did indicate 37,245 miles, it was RED& BLACK interior, No AM/FM Compact Disc Player, No Antilock Brakes (ie. No 4 wheel discs), the left side of the windsheild was cracked, the car had been poorly repainted on all areas except for the 2 doors and maybe the roof, it was with auto trans., No Alloy wheels (only with standard and rather "beatup" hubcaps, not the original tires, steering wheel column is "cockeyed" with the dash (indicating front end damage) the engine bay was very dirty and had "extra tree leaves" under the hood!!!
This is not one would expect to see for only 37,245 "original" miles on any car! It looks like 137,245 miles or more! The dealer is Triforce Auto Sales in Thornburg, Va. The dealer has since changed the ad on the Autotrader with the correct equipment info, but do not believe that is 37,245 ACTUAL miles on the odometer!!! After several days Carfax agreed to refund their fee for their inaccurate report! The dealer agreed to tear up my down-payment check of $250 when he received it, however, he cashed or deposited it according to my account! HA HA, we put a stop payment on it, so it's going back to his bank for collection back!
We did not get reimbursed for over $270 for: gas, food, lodging, wear and tear on our vehicle, and stop payment fees! Worst yet was the emotional distress and letdown our family suffered needlessly over this whole incident. All indications were that this vehicle would be a "creampuff' ie., in excellent condition. And finally, it was to be driven to California to replace my daughter's 1995 Honda Civic EXA which was "totaled" on 14 September.
