When I was getting an oil change last week, they recommended that I purchase a power steering fluid replacement (code PFE) and fuel system tune-up (FST) while I was in the waiting room. They showed me a spot test for my power steering fluid, showing that it was dirty (the wrong color), and a cotton swab showing that my fuel injection system was fouled up. I was a dupe (should have talked to my parents first) and said yes to these two services, amounting to an additional $190.

When I was getting new tires put on, at the same location, ONE WEEK LATER, in the same waiting room, the evening manager did his spiel and recommended the SAME TWO SERVICES when I was getting new tires! When I asked him why I was recommended the same two services, he said he would go talk to the mechanic who worked on my car.

When he came back, he said that the mechanic made a mistake and that my car was actually fine. How convenient! I said, OK, then how about you show me my card (the one with the spot test and the cottons swab). He told me that the mechanic threw it away and couldn't find it. Again, how convenient! How could he possibly expect me to believe that?

Are all National Tire & Battery locations like this, where extra unnecessary services are offered to customers that look as naive as me for an extra $190 a pop? I am thinking about going to small claims court for this nonsense.

Do not buy these services!
