Verbally Abused by a Car Dealership Owner (and we had not even paid late or anything)

This gentlemen apparently felt that since I have bad credit and he took a chance on me that he was allowed to scream at, insult, and degrade me.

I recorded these conversations once he got out of line. This is written straight from the tapes. I separate his dialogue from mine with line spaces:

This is a written account of an incident that occurred 08/17/04 between Martin Johnson and Polly (the co-owners/co-managers of Quality Motors in Woodland Park Colorado) and myself. Concerning the 98 Jeep Cherokee Laredo that he and his wife financed to me.

I called Quality Motors at approx 9:50am and left a message, the message was, you have been promising for 2 weeks to fix my windshield and it is not getting done. This is not an ultimatum, but I would be more comfortable if this were fixed before I make a 1000 dollar payment this coming Friday.

He called me back at approximately 10:30am and yelled at me HOW DARE YOU GIVE ME AN ULTIMATUM you are a high risk customer I am holding the bag here your credit was terrible, but I financed your car anyway!

I reminded him that I did not give him an ultimatum and that I merely said I was not comfortable giving him large sums of money when he told me that he would fix the windshield before we picked up the vehicle in the first place.

He then said in a very harsh loud tone Clarence you are trying my patients, you are a high risk customer I did you a favor I AM HOLDING THE BAG.

I was very confused at this point as to why he was getting so angry with me. I then said, Sir there is no reason for us not to be cordial to one another I'm just checking status on this repair.

Again he raised his voice repeating CLARENCE you are trying my patience, If I say I'll do something I'll do it you are a high risk customer If you are even one day late on any payment I will repo your car.

At this point I was becoming frightened (I need this vehicle for work plus I have kids) and my voice cracked a little with emotion as I quietly said, sir why do you treat your customers this way? I have not been late with any payments. Why are you threatening to repo my car.

This is when he began to insult me, I'm assuming because he heard my voice was shaky, he then said. Clarence are you mentally unstable or something?

Being offended I asked Why would you say such a horrible thing to one of your customers? Is this how you normally do business?

He then began to reiterate how I was high risk and he was calling the shots here and how If I was late for any reason he would take the car adding at the end You are getting off on the wrong foot with me.

I kept asking him why he was talking so rude to me and he would ignore the question and repeat my name in an exasperated way then go back into how high risk I was and how he was calling the shots.

At this point I told him we were getting nowhere so we both hung up.

He called me back acting as if nothing had happened to tell me that he had set up an appointment to get the windshield fixed. I thanked him, warily, and hung up.

My wife arrived home at approximately 12:30pm I told her about the incident and she looked over the contract carefully and noticed a discrepancy in our bi-weekly payment amounts. She asked me to call Quality Motors back and verify our payment because she was afraid he would exploit the discrepancy in order to repo us for no reason.

So around 1:00pm I called Mr. Johnson back. And asked him which number is correct the lower or the higher amount?

He answered, My wife did that because she thought it would be easier on you.

A bit confused by this, I asked, so the lower amount is correct?

This is where he became angry again saying Clarence, can you repeat back to me the sentence I just said?

I said Sir, you are doing it again, why are you speaking to me in this manner. I simply asked if it was the lower or higher amount and your answer was vague.

Martin began insulting me again, saying, Clarence are you mentally unstable? And followed it with this direct threat, I think we should end this contract now because you are mentally unstable. Needless to say I was totally flabbergasted by this and told my wife, who was standing next to me, that he was threatening to take the Jeep back.

She saw I was very upset and not understanding how he could take the car just because I asked him not to be rude, held her hand out for the phone.

She said what is your problem sir we have a contract with you that we are honoring you cannot just take the car because we object to your verbal abuse.

Mr. Johnson responded Why are you calling and harassing me? I got your window scheduled you should thank me.

My wife answered I am talking to you because you are screaming at us and being rude to a paying customer.

He asked her if she had run a business before and she said she had for several years his next insult was this: well you must have not been very good at it with credit like yours.

Marty then launched back into how high risk we were and how he was in control.

The next day I called his wife and she screamed at me in a similar manner her most memorable line after I informed her I was recording the call was as follows.

Then record this if you are even one minute late on a payment we will repo your vehicle!
