Beware of Jiffy Lube's unnecessary services. - oil change

I don’t usually take the time to share with the world when I have a bad experience somewhere. Yet these guys bother me so much I feel compelled. Jiffy Lube has got to be one of the worst scams out there. Unlike most of the community, I have always done my own maintenance on vehicles. So it’s not too hard to spot someone trying to blatantly lie to me about mechanical items. For some reason, time constraints made me think that a few dollars more for an oil change service was worth it. This is a service that I have only used a few times before, with similar results. They have never failed to disappoint. Too bad, because at times they could be helpful. First of all, they will touch things they weren’t asked to, often times improperly, as they did when they tore my cabin filter housing without informing me (found that out later). Or they try and buffalo uninformed people into changing fluids or equipment that don’t need it, which they have tried to do to me in the past. What they are not counting on is that I know when things need changing.

Upon first arriving at Jiffy Lube store #2532, I informed them that ONLY the parts of my vehicle necessary to change the oil and filter were to be touched. I very clearly announced that any other services were not needed or welcome. Ignoring that simple request, they checked the tire pressure, washed my windshield (now covered in a smearing film), air filter, serpentine belt, and exterior lights.in addition to this blatant disregard to my wishes, they said that I would need to use their synthetic oil in order to meet Chrysler’s MS-6395 oil standard, making my $20 oil change into a $50-$80 oil change (depending on synthetic oil grade). I refused and insisted they put in the conventional grade oil back in so I could leave before something else happened. They were rude about it, and persisted that I listen to their “expert” advice. That is also when they informed me that they didn’t have the proper oil filter for my 2012 Wrangler, but could get one from a parts dealer close by. This was after they already dropped the old oil and filter out. So now I’m stuck unless I conform to THEIR wishes. At this point I have had it, and tell them exactly what’s going to happen next. They immediately switch service guys on me, and things start to smooth out. Finally someone smart enough to avoid a physical confrontation started doing as asked, which was to put my rig back together so I can leave. Upon my first arrival into their work bay, it took them 1 hour and 15 minutes to do a simple oil change. I couldn’t have been more disappointed by a service of this type than I was last night.

By the way, Pennzoil conventional grade oil DOES indeed meet Chrysler’s MS-6395 standards. So a $20 oil change cost me the price of a filter they don’t stock, an extra quart of oil beyond the $20 price, totaling $27.58.
