Selling unnecessary services and taking advantage of unknowing customers

My wife, who has very little knowledge of auto mechanics and little experience in maintenance, took my stepdaughter's '04 Infiniti to Jiffy Lube for an oil change.By the time they were through, they had convinced her that the car needed a new radiator cap, a flushing of the radiator and replacement coolant, draining and refilling of the transmission and the replacement of both serpentine belts. The total bill was slightly less than $400.00. This shop tried selling me a bunch of goods as well when I had taken my truck there for an oil change but I wasn't buying it. Unfortunately I had not told her of what I had experienced and had already made up my mind that I would no longer patronize Jiffy Lube.

So out of concern for her daughter's safety, she agreed to have this stuff done.
Had it been me, I would have had them show me proof that two serpentine belts needed replacement and make the call myself. I would have wanted to assess for myself if the coolant and transmission fluids needed replacement.in addition, several people I know who brought their vehicles to Jiffy Lube were told they needed to replace their radiator caps, ever since they got this machine in to supposedly test them for pressure integrity.

It is readily apparent that they sell unnecessary goods and services to people who don't know any better and therefore rely on their so-called expertise. So, a $40.00 oil change turns into a $400.00 ripoff.
