Service department ripoff, do you think I am an idiot, I told you what was wrong with my truck and now you want to charge me for telling me it needs to be repaired

My 1994 Dodge pickup had a leak in the stearing gear box. I looked up the gear box in my service manuel to see if I could fix the leak. It seemed simple enough to do but I ran out of time before my trip.

I called Lou Grubb service and spoke with Tim Hodder, the service advisor and explained the leak from the gear box.

"Bring it in and we will take a look at it" says Tim the advisor.

My parents that were in town so they took it in for me.

Tim calls me later that day with bad news. The gear box needs to be replaced. Ouch! $950.00. Tim also checked out my breaks as requested, another $940.00.

Lou grubb will ONLY install a new gear box. This is the ONLY way Lou Grubb will repair a stearing gear box with a leaking seal.

I can not afford the excessive repair charges as quoted and decided not to have Lou Grubb do the work.

Tim explained there would be a charge for looking at my truck and would be applied to the cost of the repairs if I changed my mind and decided to have the ripoff service department fix my breaks and gear box.

No problem with the $86.95 per hour they want to charge untill I see the invoice.

Lou Grubb charged me $43.88 for looking at the stearing gear box. Did I not hear the advisor tell me the ONLY repair Lou Grubb will make to a stearing gear box is to replace it?

The next day I called Lou Grubb and spoke with the service department manager Ted. Sorry no last name. I played stupid and told him I had a leaking stearing gear box and asked if Lou Grubb could fix the box.

Ted promply told me the only way Lou Grubb will fix the stearing gear box is to replace it with a new one.

So I explained that I had called and spoke with Tim Hodder and gave Tim the same information I gave Ted, the service manager, and now asked Ted why I was charged $43.88 to look at the gear box when Ted told me over the phone, free of charge, that the box had to be replaced.

If I take a flat tire in to get patched, the tire shop does not look at the flat tire and tell me it is flat, then charge me for telling me it is flat.

Good point says Ted. Let me talk to the service advisor Tim and I will call you back.

Never heard from Ted again.

So I call Paul Anderson, manager of the dealership. Same story!!! Call you back in ten minutes. Never heard from Paul.

I had the gear box replaced by another shop and now have a lifetime warranty, which Lou Grubb does not give, for about half the price.

Be smart about getting your car fixed. Call several places for quotes and advice before taking it in.
