I filled out an online form from Carloans.com and received calls from various dealerships that wanted me to come into the dealership. I received a call from Gateway saying that I was approved for a car loan and they wanted me to bring in pay stubbs, utility bills, rent receipts etc... I was referred to a salesman by the name of Eddie. I gave him all the info requested and told him about my credit situation. He ran my credit report (which I thought I'd done all of that with Carloans.com) and was told I needed a co-signor. I was reluctant but my best friend areed to do it.
I was told everything was in order and I picked a nice 2002 car. I asked Eddie if everything was in order because I'd gone through Gateway years ago and put down a down payment, went home with the car and had for four weeks only to get a phone call for the dealership telling me I had to bring the car back because I worked a temp job and banks didn't finance people who worked for temp agencies. I brought the car back with some hassle from the dealership. I explained this to Eddie and he told me everything was final and to enjoy my car. Well, sure enough three and half weeks after having this car I got a call from Eddie telling me to bring the car back and we could try another program. I said no I want my down payment back. He said I would have to pay for the days I had the car out, as if it were a rental. I said no I didn't come to your dealership for a rental car. When you send people off the lot without having them financed for a car, that was risk you run for lying to them.
He told me to bring the car in and I would get my money back. I came into the dealership with my aunt and he tried for an hour to change my mind about working with another program. I said no for an hour and was getting very upset. He told me I was having buyer's remorse. I said no, you were the ones that told ME to bring the car back. After sitting in the dealership for over two hours.
I was cut a check in the name of my co-signor. I told Eddie, my co-signor wasn't the one who gave Gateway the downpayment. I wanted the check in my name. He told me no for legal reasons. I said fine add my name to the check, they agreed. He brings over the check only it was signed. Eddie said there was problem. The person that signs the check had left for the day. At this point I was enraged, because he knew I was coming into the dealership for my downpayment. He then checks the car and tell me about some damage I was unaware of. He told me that would cost $200 off the top of his head. He said that price was quoted from the higher ups on the premises.By this time I was LIVID! I marched back into the dealership, told him I would be here first thing in the morning and to have my check ready. I cause a scene in the dealership that day.
The next day I went to the dealership and got my check minus the supposed $200 in damage and minus the insurance they put down on the car for a day when I initially left the dealership because they were going to get back the full amount form the insurance co. So they deducted the amount from my check (down payment).
I will tell any that will listen never do business with GATEWAY. The dealership is a ripoff
