My son's car was towed from his friends apartment one night even though the person calling for the tow knew it was my son's car. He said it was only towed because another vehicle was being towed that night and he had to "fair about it".
When I called the towing company the next morning they said the price to get the car back was $225. Wow! That much for just being towed 4 miles and on their lot for 10 hours! So I asked if I could use my Visa card to pay and they said no, cash only. All of their invoices clearly show they accept Visa and MC. So I had to run around on a Sunday morning looking for cash.
Come to find out, these people have towing agreements with many apartment complexes in the area. All they have to do is post a few signs as required by State law and they can tow you at any time because as soon as you drive onto the property and you don't live there, you are "unauthorized" and subject to towing.
Wow, what a nice racket they have going here. I would not be surprised if some of the money get's back to the person that called for the tow.
So if you need towing, don't call these guys! You may have to pay more than you think.
Also, you may have noticed that many shopping center stores are claiming parking spaces as their own and posting tow away signs. As a former City Code administrator, I can tell you that if your car were towed, you could sue their pant's off! When a shopping center is designed, the parking spaces are intended to serve the entire building. If for instance you wished to park at one end and visit a store at the other end, that is your right. The only way an individual store could claim part of the parking lot would be if they purchased the property and it were separated by recorded property lines.
