Aamco has grossly over charged me. My escort was towed in for a transmission rebuild on 5-8-03. The bill was $2737.84 which included 3 new mounts @ $155 (I can purchase the same for under $100) and the replacement of an axel @ $180 (I normaly purchase them for $90 rebuilt).
The car was picked up 5-12-03 by my son. When I got home from work my son told me the car was running poorly. I drove it the next day to see what was wrong. The car vibrated terribly. It shifted harshly, and engagement into drive or reverse was slow (delayed). I returned the car to them. They road tested it again and they felt the trans was not the cause. On ocassion it would not downshift after stopping for a traffic light and then slam upon trying to accelerate.
It even occured during the road test. They still claimed it wasn't the trans but offered to look at it again the next day. I warned him the car would be going to Virginia at the end of the week. We picked it up again on 5-15-03. It ran fine. The next evening my son left for virginia. About 2/3rds of the way down I recieved a call that the car was begining to vibrate again.By the time he made it to his hotel in Williamsburg, Va the trans was dead.
Somewhere between 500 to 600 miles a $2737.84 rebuild failed. Since 5-17-03 my escort has been sitting at the newport news aamco waiting to be looked at overpriced their work. Searches have turned up certified replacement units for $1200 shipped with a 5 year 50,000 mile warantee. Any shop can install these for $300 to $500, or if you have the facilities you can do it yourself.
In my opinion, I have been ripped off for a shoddy repair, incomplete rebuild, at a grossly inflated price.
I am a NY State DMV Safety and Emmisions inspector and will be filing a written complaint with the state.
