They try but are not 100% competent

I had used this auto repair shop for a few years. I stopped using them about a year ago for a few reasons.in order to protect my anonymity I will not list exact details about what has happened to me at their hands.

They seem to be genuinely well-meaning. The owner is Brazilain and all the mechanics are as well. This has some pluses and minuses. On the plus side they are knowledgeable about certain older vehicles in ways that the average American mechanic is not. Where an American mechanic would just tell you you need to replace a part and order you a new one, the guys at Lein's know quite a few "work arounds". But the downside to this is that they will often jury-rig a repair or replace your worn-out part with a used part, often without asking you if you wanted to use something new. I think they are accustomed to a Brazilian-born clientele whse primary motivation is to save money. Even when I asked them to replace with new, sure enough when I queried them post-repair they would admit to using a used part. The result would be that I would experience a repeat failure the next year with the same part.

These guys come from a country where you can walk up to another man, shake his hand, give your word on something and be trusted, something lost in this litigation-crazy and fear-ridden society. They still operate as much as possible in the old ways which I always liked about them.

But overall after using them quite a few times I have to say that I am deeply disappointed. I will explain why:

Firstly, one of the repairs they did for me was disastrous. I mean disastrous. It was not done intentionally but I think was done from sheer incompetence. For anyone owning an older vehicle who does NOT know much about repairing your own auto, this would not be the shop for you. This is the shop more for the DIY repair guy who encounters a vexing problem while working on his own engine for 5 hours on a Saturday in his decently-equipped garage. Because you do NOT want to drive your vehicle off this garage's lot, like I did, and not take a good long look at your vehicle and check it out. I do not what repairman was working on my vehicle for this incident but hopefully he is no longer there. Luis is the head guy there and I think he is the owner too (pretty sure he is). He seems to know his stuff really well but I have taken a look around the shop and some of the other guys look less competent than Luis looks.

Again I won't elaborate on the incident, as I do not want to be identified by them and face any retribution.

Secondly, the previously-mentioned old-style atmosphere where your word is your bond and where you get leeway with them is quickly eroding. I have noticed a marked erosion of good-will and relaxed dealings over time. Also the prices seemed to have leapt up along with the recession we are experiencing. The are not taking responsibility for errors either. Disappointing. All the more disappointing because they specialize in older VWs. I have a beetle and it is hard to find anyone to work on it who really knows it.

I would not say do not use these guys but you should go in to any transaction very specifically outlining what you want, how you want it done, and what you expect to pay. After the repair is completed do a once-over on your vehicle and make sure it is in good working order.
