Jeep Compass 2007 Clutch failure at 12,700 miles. Dealer and Chrysler indulge in falsehood to avoid responsibility

The clutch of my 2007 Jeep Compass failed after about 11 months use and less than 13 000 miles.

Since taking possession of the Compass, there has always been a burnt clutch smell after minor operations such as parallel parking.in retrospect I should have reported it, but I dismissed it as the result of a new clutch wearing in. Besides I was covered for three years, or so I thought. My contention is that the clutch was defective from the beginning.

New Country Auto, the local Chrysler dealer, allegedly told Chrysler that the clutch was misused by towing over-weight trailers. Such a conclusion is entirely false. The Compass is rated to tow up to 2,000 lbs, and my camper trailer, as determined for the purpose of obtaining a Colorado title, is less than 1,200 lbs. This camper trailer is the only thing that the Compass has ever towed, and then only on three occasions.

Consequently Chrysler refused to repair a vehicle that was defective from the beginning. They did not even express any surprise or concern that the clutch had failed. Their attitude can be summed up as, "Tough luck! You should have known better than buying a Chrysler product."
