I purchased car from piotr and i did not get the car or my money back

My and my husband's friend purchased a car from Piotr Znaniecki and we were looking to purchase a car so my friend told me about Piotr. We contacted Mr. Znaniecki and he told me that he is a car dealer and he has a dealer license and he buys cars from auto auction on internet (the name of the auto action is Copart)

Mr. Znaniecki gave me his log in information to Copart and told me to log in and search for the car we liked and once we would find it, to let him know about it and he would get the car for me. That sounded good to me and since in order to buy a car from that auction you would have to have dealer's license which we do not have we agreed to let him purchase a car for me from that auction and we were told that we could get cars form there for much, much less then from a dealer.

We were certain that we would find a car for me on that auction that we gave Mr. Znaniecki $ 2,000 that day for which we got a receipt.

We logged on to Copart and searched for cars, it took me a while but we finally found not one but two cars on Copart that we were interested in buying. We contacted Mr. Znaniecki and we told him to purchase the two cars for me (one vehicle was a 2004 Chevy van and the other was 2006 Cadillac STS). The auction for the two cars was on the same day which was on May 31st.

Mr. Znaniecki called us that day at the time of that auction and he was letting me know the price of each vehicle and we were telling him what to bid for each of the vehicles and we bought the two cars that day, Chevy cost $6,300. And the Cadillac cost $14,400. The total for the to vehicles come all most to $ 22,000.
Mr. Znaniecki told us that he doesn't have money to pay for the cars in order to pick them up from auction, so he asked us to give him the money up front and he will bring the cars to our home. We agreed, Mr. Znaniecki come to pick the money to our home in Long Island New York from Pennsylvania and at that time we gave him ten thousand dollars in cash and he wrote out a receipt for us and he said that next day he will bring one of the cars and then he will collect the remaining balance and then he will bring the second car, so we agreed.

Couple days later one of his employees (so we were told) brought the Chevy Van to our home. Couple days later after that Mr. Znaniecki come back to pick up the rest of the money in order to pay for the Cadillac and pick it up from the auction. That day we gave him the balance of $10,000 in cash. And we were supposed to get the Cadillac in couple of days. When he was picking the car up he called us and he informed us that the vehicle was damaged during the pickup (to be exact he said that when they were lifting the car to put in on truck they dropped it and it got damaged) and he asked us if we still want the Cadillac. When we purchased the car it didn't have any body damage, so when he told us that it got damaged we told him that we don't want that car anymore from obvious reasons, and we want the money back. Mr. Znaniecki informed us that since he already paid the money to Copart he would have to get refund from them and then return the money to us.

Well, we waited about three weeks and didn't hear from Mr. Znaniecki so we called him and we asked about our money so he said that he didn't receive the check from Copart jet and he doesn't have that kind of money to return to us. We waited another couple of weeks and then I called Mr. Znaniecki and I asked him again for the money and he said the same thing as before. We wanted to know how long it takes to get refund from Copart so we called them ourselves and they couldn't tell us that, but we found that the vehicle we were supposed to buy was sold on May 31 which was the day we purchased the car. We automatically assumed that Mr. Znaniecki used my money to buy the car for himself. So we went to Pennsylvania to talk to him in person and to see if he has the Cadillac or not. When we got there his shop was closed and there was sign FOR RENT with phone number. We called the number and we were told that Mr. Znaniecki is gone and we were advised not to give Mr. Znaniecki any money because we would not see it again. We were also told that Mr. Znaniecki ripped off many others and we weren't the only ones looking for him. Since then we tried to call him but his phone doesn't accept incoming calls and last we heard he moved to Detroit.
Please someone help me get my money back.

Thank You
