In May of I called Progressive to get car insurance. Because my car is financed, I have to maintain full coverage. They were the cheapest out of all the companies I checked. The woman who set up my policy wanted to know if I lived with anyone, and if so, their names and birthdates.
At the time of my call, I was living with my younger brother and my father. (I am a store manager for a retail pharmacy and was transferred to a store 30 minutes from my dad, so I stayed there until I was transferred out.) At the time, my brother was 16 and I told the woman I did not want to insure him. He did not EVER drive my car. He had his own car, with his own insurance. I did have them insure my dad because it was only 2.00 a month extra, but he never drove it.
The woman said that she understood not wanting to insure my brother, she had a teenage son and knew how expensive it was. At NO time did she ever say I needed to fill out papers and send them in to omit my brother from the policy. ANyway, I started paying my monthly premium over the phone out of my checking account.in October of I was sent a cancellation notice for non-payment! I paid every month on time. I thought it was a mistake so I called them.
The 'past due' amount was 901.00, the cost of insuring my 16 year old brother! I told the woman I did not want him insured, nor did I ever want him insured. I no longer lived with him anyway. I told her, as I told the first rep, he has his own car with his own insurance. SHe told me to get a copy of his insurance policy and fax it to her. I contacted my father to get the policy and faxed it. It was on a friday. SHe told me to have a good weekend and not to worry about this. SHe would work and it and get back to me.
No calls for a week, so I called her. SHe told me I would have to pay it, as my brother's insurance was only for liability, not full coverage. She also said I should have filled out and exclusion form. WHAT! They never told me about that before then. My brother NEVER EVER drove my car, not once. My dad didn't even drive it and he was insured on it! Now, they have turned it over to NCO Financial Collection Agency! I do not owe this money, but it has ruined my credit. I don't know what to do. I hate talking to NCO, because all they do is imply they will sue me.
I don't have 901.00, and if I did I would not want to pay it because I don't believe I owe it. I filled out a complaint with the 3 credit bureaus to investigate it, but have not heard anything back. I don't know what to do with this. It is affecting my ability to buy a house and get other car insurance at a good rate. Any suggestions are welcome!
