Ripoff repo/towing company makes up fees

Our truck was repoed out of my own stupidity. When the repo man arrived, I called the leinholder to find out what I needed to do to get it back. They told me I had to allow the repo man to take it, pay off what I owed and go pay the repo fees of $300 - $350 to the repo company. I willingly turned the vehicle over. The driver asked for the keys. I gave them to him, and he straightened the wheels for towing and gave them back to me. I also asked him if I should get everything out. He told me no, not if I was getting the truck back that day. He said he didn't need the keys and told me to lock it and no one would touch it until we got there. He gave me the card for National Recovery where it was being taken.

I immediately paid the lienholder to get the release process in action. I also called National Recovery before our truck even arrived there to let them know the leinholder had been paid and check to see if the paperwork had been recieved.

Within a couple minutes of that call, the leinholder called us and said the release had been faxed. I called National Recovery back and they said they still hadn't recieved it. After several phone calls back and forth, they found our paperwork. I asked what the fee would be, expecting to be told between $300 and $350.instead, I was told $589.By this time they had had the truck less than four hours.

I called the leinholder and spoke to their recovery department. The rep called the quoted fees EXCESSIVE and told me I definately should not have to pay more than the $350 repo fee and one day's storage (if that).

So we headed to their lot, which was nearly an hour away. When we arrived, we asked for a breakdown of what we were paying. We were told there was a $350 repo fee, $110 because they had to cut a key, $20 property recovery fee, $50 fee for removing my property from the vehicle, etc.

I was shocked. I had offered the driver the keys and he refused them saying they weren't needed, then, a couple hours later they were trying to charge me for cutting a key.

I was also shocked by the $70 in personal property fees because they knew before the truck arrived there that we had paid the lienholder and were coming to get the vehicle. There was no reason for them to cut the key to get into the vehicle or remove any of the property from the vehicle.

However, they wouldn't release the vehicle until we paid the fees. It stinks that they know you are in a tight situtation and they continue to take advantage of you. They made $600 for towing my truck about 60 miles and doing things they already knew were not necessary.
