I had a typical service done (), and they tell me it'll be 30 minutes. I come back 30 minutes later, they tell me I "need" to have my brake fluid and power steering fluid flushed and replaced, which will be something like $7.99 and 15.99. I added them up quickly in my head and thought, "well, adding those to the service will total roughly $55 or so—not too bad." I told them to go ahead and do it, but not before asking them why I "need" to have them replaced.
Their answer was that they were "dirty." I have my car serviced regularly according to the recommended time frame/mileage—give or take some, and I rarely drive that car—maybe once a week at most, so there's no reason why my brake and power steering fluid would be so dirty that they need to be flushed and replaced. But I gave them the benefit of the doubt (and also because it didn't seem like they would cost much to do).
They said it'll take another 20 minutes, so I came back 20 minutes later. That's when they hit me with the $100 extra for labor! $50 for each of the flushing / replacement. I was very upset, because they said nothing about it, and even the numbers she had shown me on the exact spot she jotted down the cost on the same page has been "modified" with an extra digit.
