I wasn’t expecting things to go so poorly as they did. My friends and I waited in line, shuffling forwards slowly, until we finally reached the counter. I ordered, gave the lady at the register a twenty dollar bill, and received... 37 cents? What? I looked at the receipt she'd given me, which claimed that I’d given her a five. I hadn’t even had a five in my wallet. Of course, I figured, it was just a simple mistake. She’d punched in the wrong thing, handed back the wrong change... “Ma’am? ” I called, in the split second break between the horde of hungry schoolchildren. “Ma’am, I think you’ve made a mistake. I gave you a twenty, and here you put that it was only a five.” “You gave me a ten, ” she told me, despite the fact that I hadn’t been in possession of a ten, either. “It says five because I equalized it to the closest amount.” I had no clue what that was supposed to mean. “If I gave you a ten, you’d still owe me five dollars, ” I reasoned. “But I didn’t give you a ten. I gave you a twenty.” She pulled the cash drawer open and slammed it closed. “There aren’t any twenties inside, ” She told me sourly. “You didn’t give me a twenty. Next.” The girl beside me furrowed her eyebrows. “There was totally just a twenty in that drawer she opened, ” the girl muttered. “Ma’am, ” I tried again, “You owe me 15 dollars...” She ignored me.
And with no hard proof, that was that. I was left 15 dollars short. There was no manager to complain to, either, because the woman who had taken my money WAS the manager of the store.
