Solo

I was a little uncomfortable—alone, pushing eighty (11 months and I'll be pulling it), casually dressed— aware that I was not Applebee's target clientele, but was greeted like a friend She gave me the table I wanted small, for two with enough light for reading my book. Melanie, my server, made me feel right at home. I ordered a beer from her list of draft beers: Flying Fish despite, or maybe because of its disgusting name. From the menu I ordered the 12 oz. New York Strip with Garlic Mashed Potatoes. The meat was quite edible. However, the potatoes were gritty—grainy—like Lava soap! But it tasted better. And the beer was lovely!
