I was a manager for Ruby Tuesday for roughly four years starting in 2002. When I fist joined they were a great company but as time when by it became worse. The first thing this company did was change the dress code often. As a manager I was expected to reprimand employees for improper dress code includiing no skirts. This bothered me because some religions the women have to wear skirts.
That was not enought Ruby Tuesday jumped on the Adkins train and it went down hill from there. The uniform policy was immediatly changed to the "image policy" in this policy we as managers were expected to inspect peoples immage, if they had bad teeth they were told to get them fixed the ladies had to wear make up and there was a standard for weight.
Thats where it went down hill I was fast moving to be a general manager but when the weight policy came into effect, which they will deny exists. When this policy came into effect we as managers were forced to challange ourselves to lose wieght especially those of us who are over weight. We were also told not to hire anyone not attractive or over weight. Sample questions we were told to as the team member that would bring us an application from a future team member is would you date him or her? If the answere was not we were advised to simply tell them that we were not hiring.
As i mentioned above I was fast moving to be a general manager infact I was told I would be the GM of the next opening. However when the "image policy" came into effect that went out the window. I was challenged to lose 50 pounds and I did. I put myself on a very strict diet when the opening came up I questioned my potental promotion and was told that I needed to lose more wieght, get a trendy hair style and smaller glasses or better yet contacts. I got a trendy hair syle very small framed glasses and lost more weight and was told that I was just still too big. I have no idea why a skinny manager makes a better manager than a overweight manager and never will. I since left the company and I am a company that respects their employees. However I am still emotionally scared. Thanks for listening.
