Last night our server told us that if we used our AMEX gift card, they would have to apply 20% towards gratuity. We planned on leaving the tip in cash and wanted to use the value of the gift card towards the bill total. We did not understand why 20% would be applied to gratuity. There were only (4) people, so the gratuity was not automatically added to the bill. As a side note, we left a 20% tip on our own, we did not need to be told by the Starr Organization how much gratuity should be given to our server. And lastly, when we used a Starr gift card earlier this year at Barclay Prime, they did not deduct for gratuity from the value of the gift card, so I wonder if it's just a Buddakan thing or an AMEX gift card thing. Quite upsetting either way.
