I was contacted by phone several years ago Midland Aquisitions, demanding i immediatly send $600 to avoid legal action. They were unable to provide information as to the nature of the debt, other then they had purchased my account from another agency. I refused to send any $ without documentation.
I believed that was end of it until I was contacted by phone 10/01/04 by a Justin Jones from CAMCO requesting i contact him "immediatly to avoid criminal charges". That was follwed with letter from CAMCO today, 10/4/04, "generously" offering to settle my debt and threatening to proceed with appropriate collection after evaluating my credit report unless i agree to payment terms.
The debt is from 1984, and has long since been settled.
I contacted Mr Jones to advise him of error, He told me the debt was still owed and unless i had proof of payment his company intended to collect. We got into an exchange in which i asked him to provide details of how my account was procured for collection and he stated that the debt was purchased and that he had notorized affidavit showing debt was legit. He faxed me 2 copies, the first showing 10/04/04 as procurement date, NOT NOTORIZED only stating CAMCO bought account from Midland.
About 10 minutes later i recieved same documents as in first fax, only now with notory seal dated 10/04/04.
What a gimmick!!! I asked mr Jones why this was not on my credit report if it was legit debt. He said it was on there from 1986 - 1993 but according to his records was not resolved and if not handled within 5 days would be reported to all credit rating agencies.
I am filing a complaint with FTC and would love to be involved in any legal action to stop these guys, they almost intimidated me into thinking it might be better just to send them the money. I refuse to pay something i do not owe. These guys are RIPOFFS!!!
