I had my first experience with allied interstate was about a year ago when sears hired them to collect a large debt from me. My total debt ranged around $2800 at the time. I arranged payment with them and payed about $1200 in a few months. After that, I was layed off and notified them that I would only be able to pay $150 a month and agreed to let them take the money out of my checking account on a weekly basis. They did that for a few months and then I noticed that the money was no longer coming out of my account. That went on for three months until one day they called me at work claiming that I only owed $480 to close the account. I told them I would pay it in the next couple of months but was only able to pay half. After that, they stopped contacting me altogether until 4 weeks ago when I received a letter threatening legal action and stating that I once again owed the full $2800. I didn't see how this was possible and so I sent a letter to them via secured mail stating that I would gladly make payments of at least $200 a month until the debt according to my records is paid in full. I have been sending money via priority mail every friday. I also stated that they weren't to call me at work under any circumstances and I am in the process of moving, so I don't have personal phone service. They still call work several times a day, although I have proof that they received this letter. My supervisor and myself as well as several other people have told them we wouldn't accept their calls at work, but they still keep ringing the phone off the hook. I stated to them that because of my situation, the only way to reach me is by mail, but they haven't sent a letter since the last one I responded to. They also call my father and harass him a couple of times a night wanting to know where I'm at. This has to stop. I keep pretty good records, so I know for a fact I don't owe this much money and I know that once I tell them not to call me at work, they can't. The last time I checked, it isn't illegal not to own a home phone either. Maybe I handled this wrong, but I have no intention of letting an un-paid debt go unsettled. However, the constant harrassment is making it harder to solve. I know what I owe, apparently they don't. Any advice would be helpful from anyone out there. Thanks
