Incident: 5:50 PM 1/12
I was shopping earlier today at the local kmart in shillington, PA and I had two unused gift cards with me. I proceeded to the one of the two checkout lines that was open and asked the guy at the counter how much were on the cards.
He swiped them to find that there was $15 on the one card and $10 on the other and I even saw the numbers on the screen. I then took less than 5 minutes to pick out an item I was looking for for $19.99.
By then the checkout line I went to before was full so I proceeded to the other cash register for checkout. The girl at the counter scanned my item and then went on to swipe my two gift cards. The first card with $15 went through smoothly, but then the second card for some reason kept getting declined.
At this point only 4 to maybe 5 minutes have gone by since I checked with the first guy so there was no way I could have spent the $10 on the card without anyone knowing since there was only two registers open. The girl kept trying to swipe and scan the card several different times, but with no luck. She finally called over who seemed to be some sort of manager or co-employee for assistance.
This employee then tried to fix the problem, but then turned to me to simply say, "There's no money on the card." Now I knew that couldn't be true. But he continued to blandly say, "Do you have a receipt of some kind? Maybe the card was not initialized correctly..."
It was a year since I received the giftcards so I forgot who gave them to me so I didn't know where the receipts were. What really made me mad was that he couldn't do anything about it, but instead of arguing with him I unhappily paid the rest of the bill with a credit card.
