HSBC are thieves. I have been a small personal banking customer for 4 years now and finally they have pushed me too far. At every opportunity they can, HSBC sting you with a 'fee' of some description. Often pushing me into overdraft where I'm charged a further $20 (in Australia).
I complained about this to a teller at the main Collins St. Branch in Melbourne recently, and told her I was on the verge of changing banks, even she agreed HSBC are average, saying "I don't blame you".
It is well known they don't care in the slightest about 'the little man'. They are a business focused bank - DO NOT bank with them if you are an individual without business interests. It is simple, you'll lose money.
Today I spoke to the call center people (based out of India) and said I would like to close my account. She happily provided me a fax number to write my closure letter. No queries, no transfer to the retention center, no nothing. I can't say I was surprised. They quite simply don't care.
Well HSBC, I have just taken my mortgage to a competitor bank and I will be telling my extended personal and professional networks to steer clear of HSBC for any business, be it personal or professional.
