During the Summer, HH Gregg offered a particular TV for $999 AND 24 months interest free payment. I bought one in mid June. With tax it was $1065 and filing an application with GE Money Bank for a credit card.
I made my first payment at the end of June of $200.
Second payment of $200 at the end of July.
In August, the statement has a $39 LATE FEE added.
I called the GE Money Bank service dept and the guy in India said My payment was late and the charge was appropriate. This lit me off because if anything my payments were 3 weeks early. The guy took the charge off after MUCH heated debate.
I made a third $200 payment at the end of August and a fourth $200 payment at the end of September.
The September statement came with ANOTHER $39 late fee. I was furious. I called again and the guy said they would not take the late charge off a second time. I've never been so mad. They could not understand that I was repaying the money much faster than the minimum amount and had made the first payment before the first bill even arrived and that my payments were 3 weeks ahead of the due date.
I immediately paid off the loan before they tried to attack my credit rating and when the ballance showed zero on line, I had the account closed with a letter stating that it is closed.
Their story was that their computer looked for a payment to come in just before the due date and anything that comes in just after is a late payment and triggers the late charge. Many people won't read their statement close enough to notice this type of fraud from big companies like GE Money Bank.
This type of computer programing is evidence of the corporate greed that is so prevalent in large corporations today.
