Seven Days Late Reported as 30 Days Past Due

What I'd like to understand is how, if you miss paying by the "please pay by" date, and the actual next billing date a few days later - you are considered "30 days past due". I.E. My statement said please pay by the 26th, my next statement cycled the 2nd. How is paying 7 days after the due date "30 days past due"? And reflected thus on your credit report??? Thanks
