The best way to tell my son's story is give you a copy the letter I wrote to 5/3rd concerning this incident.

Dear Branch Manager:
I am writing this letter concerning my son's 5/3 rd checking account which he overdrew last week. He has been serving in the US Army and spent 7 months in Iraq and just returned in February. He came home for the first time in 9 months. He has had car problems and several other financial matters come up since he returned that were unexpected. He and I watch his account on a daily basis to make sure his account is current. Last Tuesday, March 23rd I noticed his account had a balance of $8.02 but it was overdrawn. I quickly transferred 25.00 to be sure he did not bounce any transactions. The next day you slapped him with 185 dollars in overdraft fees. His account did have $8.02 but I am sure you have some excuse why he is being charged 185 dollars even though some of these were for no more than several dollars. This situation had spiraled out of control and at last count he is 419 dollars overdrawn. I sent him to your office Thursday March 25th to talk to you but he had to talk to a teller who said your office would call him back. That has not happened and you just keeping adding on the fees. I know this is all spelled out in your terms of agreement but he is a 21 year old serving in the Army. He just returned from Sauder City, Iraq which is one of the most dangerous places in Iraq. This is the way 5/3 rd treats a hero of our country. He was not asking to drop all the charges just to be fair about this. So now he is on limited income in the Army with little chance of paying this off. This account will be brought back in balance as soon as possible. We will be canceling the account once this done. I will also be changing my accounts as soon as possible.
I am sure others will like to know how he is being treated. The way the banking industry takes advantage of young adults, borders on criminal. I am a Pharmacy Manager for Kroger and if I treated a customer this way I would not have a job. I guess you just don't follow up with problems that are brought to your attention by your employees or you don't care.
I expected a much higher level of service from your company, and I am quite disappointed. I will be informing my friends, family, and anyone else who will listen about this experience.
