The free Standard Edition of the TaxAct software made 2 unforgivable and gross mistakes. It figured my standard deduction for Married Filing Joint at $7500. The 1040 Form clearly indicates the correct amount to be $10,900.
Also, because I am only 57 and drawing a retirement stipend from the USAF, it calculated a 10% penalty for early disbursement from a retirement account.
Had I not bought the $13.95 state version when I began to fill out the free federal form I would have just quit what I was doing and considered it "free and worth every penny". However, since I had 14 bucks invested, I tried to salvage it.
A TaxAct representative told me that in order to obtain any help with their software I would have to first upgrade to the Deluxe Edition, regardless that I had already spent money with them.
I feel this is throwing good money after bad and have instead requested a refund of my $13.95.
